NYU Publishing Student Association

The official page for NYU's Graduate Publishing Student Association (affectionately known as the PSA).

Two students in our program, Bethany Habinek and Sabrina Ricci, have put what they learned in the classrooms to the test and started their own online literary magazine, called FictionBrigade. FictionBrigade specializes in flash fiction, and recently Bethany and Sabrina launched a Kickstarter project. Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects, and Bethany and Sabrina hope to use the money they raise to expand FictionBrigade from a magazine that publishes writers, artists, and videographers into a community site where storytellers can upload their work and give each other support and feedback. To learn more about the project, please visit the FictionBrigade Kickstarter page.

World Book Night 2012: Apply Now!

For the next two semesters, the PSA and a group of Masters in Publishing program students will have the honor of working closely with World Book Night, a UNESCO event that promotes literacy among the wild populations of non-readers and bibliophobes.

This group of students will spearhead a social media committee dedicated to creating buzz on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) for the upcoming April 2012 event, as World Book Night seeks to expand its reach beyond the UK this year. This is an amazing opportunity to explore social media marketing in the book world, gain valuable experience, network, and build your resumes. Carl Lennertz, the Executive Director of World Book Night and formerly a director of sales at HarperCollins, will guide the committee. As soon as the committee is formed Lennertz will meet with students to set up a viral marketing strategy that can be implemented quickly and over the span of October-November and January-February. A social media expert may also meet with the committee in the first meeting, though this hasn’t been confirmed.

The PSA is considering applicants and accepting resumes until a 10/12/11, 5 p.m. (EST) deadline. If you are interested in a position on the committee, please submit your most recent resume and a brief one-paragraph social media summary to Laura Flavin at lkf233@nyu.edu.

If you have any questions about the WBN social media committee, please feel free to contact Leah Doyle, Thea James, Laura Flavin, and/or Andrea Chambers.

We hope you will consider taking advantage of this opportunity to explore different areas of book publishing and help out a great organization! Not only is this a good opportunity to become involved in a great, global cause, but it’s also an opportunity to network with important industry people and add something to your resume.

The Big Fat PSA Welcome Post

Howdy folks and welcome to NYU’s Master of Science in Publishing, the 2011-2012 edition! As you’ve probably guessed, this is the official blog for NYU publishing students, by NYU publishing students.

With our inaugural post for the 2011-2012 school year, we, your dedicated and super awesome PSA officers, would like to welcome you to the program and mention a few upcoming events and programs that you might find of interest.

(If you’d care to learn a little bit more about your PSA officers this school year, check out our About Us page.)

(If you don’t, that’s cool. We won’t hold it against you.)

Welcome Back Picnic - September 10

On September 10, we will be holding our annual Welcome Back picnic in Madison Square Park (for the newbies, that’s by the Flatiron Building, which you can access by the N, R, or 6 Trains at 23rd Street). All students are invited to attend - it’s a great opportunity to network with people that are in the program, and an invaluable way to get to know people, especially if you are new to the city. We’ll be providing some light refreshments and are close to the Shake Shack (burgers, fries, beer…) for more substantial food and drink.

PSA Happy Hour & Mentorship Meetup - September 15

If you’re a publishing student or professional, you know the importance of regular happy hours. Our first PSA Happy Hour will be on September 15 at Crocodile Lounge (14th Street & 1st Ave, accessible by L train at 1st Ave, and N,Q,R,4,5,6 trains at Union Square). In addition to getting the opportunity to network and imbibe with your fellow students (did we mention you get a free pizza - not a slice, a personal sized pizza - with every drink purchase?), we’ll also be kicking off the Mentorship Program! New students will get the opportunity to meet with potential mentors (that is, students who have been in the program for at least a semester) - we call it Mentorship Speed Dating. New students will get to meet student mentors specializing in different areas of the book and magazine industry (e.g. editorial, marketing/publicity, sales/business planning, digital, etc). Mentors will help their paired student with school freakouts, networking, career questions, etc.

We hope to see you at these events, and look forward to getting to know the incoming class and returning students! To keep up with all PSA events and news, make sure to follow us here on tumblr and join our facebook group.

Don’t forget, WINTER IS COMING! Help us help you prepare for your first semester in the program!

Hello, Earthlings.

Why, hello there.

We are your friendly Publishing Student Association for 2011-2012, and our goals for this coming school year are simple:

  • We will strive to make the PSA a resource for students in terms of academics, in the workplace, and in a social capacity.
  • We will encourage interaction between first year students entering the program and those who are in their second year (and beyond).
  • We are here to rock NYU’s M.S. in Publishing like it has never been rocked before.

Welcome to the new PSA.

Amazing
